Definition
Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block (IANB) is a mandibular nerve block technique in which local
anesthetic solution is deposited near the inferior alveolar nerve before it enters the
mandibular foramen to produce anesthesia of mandibular teeth and associated structures
on one side.
Nerves Anesthetized
• Inferior alveolar nerve
• Incisive nerve
• Mental nerve
• Lingual nerve (commonly anesthetized)
Areas Anesthetized
• Mandibular teeth up to midline
• Body of mandible
• Lower lip and chin
• Lingual soft tissues
Note: Buccal soft tissue of molars is not anesthetized (requires long buccal nerve block).
Anatomical Landmarks
• Coronoid notch
• Pterygomandibular raphe
• Occlusal plane of mandibular teeth
Target area: Inferior alveolar nerve in pterygomandibular space before mandibular
foramen.
Indications
• Extraction of mandibular teeth
• Endodontic treatment
• Periodontal procedures
• Restorative procedures involving multiple mandibular teeth
