Dual Control Switch
A power operated switch, movable point frog, or derail that can also be operated by hand.
Electric Switch Lock
An electrically controlled lock that restricts the use of a hand operated switch or derail.
Absolute Signal
A block or interlocking signal without a number plate or designated by an A marker.
Automa c Block System (ABS)
A series of consecu ve blocks governed by block signals, cab signals, or both. The signals are
ac vated by a train or by certain condi ons that affect the block use.
Block
A length of track between consecu ve block signals or between a block signal and the end of
block system limits.
Centralized Traffic Control (CTC)
A block system that uses block signal indica ons to authorize train movements.
Control Operator
An employee assigned to operate a CTC or interlocking control machine or authorized to grant
track permits.
Control Point
The loca on of absolute signals controlled by a central operator or a railroad iden fiable point
as defined in the Timetable.
Controlled Siding
A siding within CTC and Interlocking limits where a signal indica on authorizes the siding's use.
Controlled Signal
An absolute signal controlled by a control operator.
,Controlled Track
Track upon which the railroad's opera ng rules require that all movements of trains must be
authorized by a train dispatcher or a control operator.
Crossover
A combina on of two switches that connect two adjacent tracks.
Interlocking Signals
The fixed signals of an interlocking that govern trains using interlocking limits.
Loaded Bulk Commodity Train
Loaded Unit Trains are defined as a train of 50 or more loaded cars in a block, each weighing
125 tons gross weight or more (bulk commodi es), such as coal, grain, soda ash, etc.
Main Track
A track extending through yards and between sta ons that must be occupied without authority
or protec on.
Non-Controlled Track
Track upon which trains are permi8ed by railroad rule or special instruc on to move without
recieving authoriza on from train dispatcher or control operator.
Off-Track Equipment
Machines that may be operated on the right of way foul of track.
Proceed Indica on
Any block signal indica on that allows a train to proceed without stopping.
Reverse Movement
A movement opposite the authorized direc on.
Siding
A track connected to the main track and used for mee ng or passing trains. Loca ons of sidings
are shown int he Timetable.
Special Instruc ons
Instruc ons contained in the Timetable or other publica ons.
, Sta on
A place designated by name in the Timetable sta on column.
Track Bulle n
A no ce of coindi ons affec ng train movement. It may also authorize movement against the
current of traffic where rule 9.14 (movement witht he Current of Traffic) is in effect.
Track Car
Any equipment which is designed to operate on the rail, other than a Locomo ve or railroad car.
Track Warrant Control (TWC)
A method to authorize train movements or protect man or machines on a main track within
specified limits in a territory designated by the meline.
Train
One or more engines coupled, with or without cars, displaying a marker, and authorized to
operate ont he main track.
Yard Limit
A por on of main track designated by yard limit signs and me table special instruc ons or a
track bulle n.

Before transmi>ng, listen long enough to make sure the channel is not being used. Give the
required iden fica on. Not proceed with further transmission un l acknowledgement is
received.

Name or ini als of the railroad
Train name(number), enginenumber, or words that iden fy the precise mobile unit.
