White collar crime
A personal reason white collar crime is unreported is disinterest, this means the
witnesses are not concerned and do not bother reporting the crime to authorities, this is
because the public may be more interested in other more serious crimes. Another
personal reason white collar crime may be unreported is not being affected by the crime,
this means if an individual is not personally affected by a crime, they may not feel a need
to report it. An example of these personal reasons is the Ponzi scheme done by Madoff.
This is because, it is speculated Madoffs wife and children new about this scheme, yet
they did not report it because it was not personally affecting them as they were not the
ones losing money.
A social and cultural reason white collar crime is unreported is lack of knowledge, this is if
people do not know that an action is against the law or if they are unaware the crime is
happening to them because it can be easily concealed. Another social and cultural
reason white collar crime may be unreported is lack of media coverage, this is because if
a crime is not in the spotlight of the media, the public will not become sensitised to the
crime, and it may not get reported to the police. An example of these social and cultural
reasons is Madoff, who did the Ponzi scheme. This is because, the victims of this crime
were unaware of what was happening to them; therefore, they could not report it to
authorities.
Honour crime
A personal reason honour crime is unreported is fear, this means the victim could be
concerned that there will be reprisals if they report it, or the victim knows the offender
they may be afraid that if they report the crime to the authorities it might lead to further
actions against them. Another personal reason honour crime might be unreported is
shame, this means if the victim is embarrassed, they might not want to admit that is has
happened to them because of how it makes them look to others or how it makes them
feel. For example, 56% of domestic violence victims do not report out of shame, and 1 in
10 sexual assault cases go unreported due to fear.
A social and cultural reason honour crime is unreported is because of culture-bound
crime, this means an action could be illegal but may be a part of cultural practices and
because they are linked to customs of some communities it may mean they are
unreported to the police. Another social and cultural reason honour crime is unreported is
complexity, this means it can be difficult to determine whether a crime has been
committed or not and if the victim does not report or if it is covered up then it will be
hard to report and therefore will be unreported. An example of this is the murder of Tulay
Goren a 15-year-old who was killed by her father because of her relationship with an
older man from a different branch of Islamic faith.
Technological crime
A personal reason technological crime is unreported is not being affected by the crime,
this means if someone is not personally affected by a crime they may no feel the need to
report it. Another personal reason technological crime is unreported is fear, this mean
the victim may be concerned if they report it further actions could happen against them.
For example, the murder of Breck Bednar. A 14 year old boy who was killed by Lewis
