Adaptability is a skill that enables a person to change his/her actions to suit the situation at hand
(Fang, Zhang, Mei, Chai & Fan, 2018). According to Esther, in the field of nursing, situations
change very fast. In the 15 years she has worked as a nurse, she has working in two hospitals. She said
that different hospitals follow different nursing models. In the first hospital that she worked, they
followed a task-based nursing model. This model focuses on doing the most crucial activities first. To
fit in the system, she had to adapt to the processes in the hospital. Some of the doctors and surgeons in
the hospital were rude. Esther confessed that as a nurse, she just had to do all that was required of her.
However, she has a hard time adapting due to the rude nature of some doctors and surgeons. Other
nurses also saw her as inferior. In the second hospital, where she works now, she had an easy time
adapting. There, they follow an inter-professional nursing model. It makes it easy to adapt as it focuses
on ensuring a good working environment.
Teamwork is the group effort to achieve a set goal (Harvey, Freeman, & Collier, 2019).
Esther has always promoted teamwork through out her career. As a charge nurse in the operating room
she has always advocated for teamwork. According to Esther, in an operating room teamwork
determines the success of the operations. She said that before, during and after operation, coordination
is required. This is because a single operation involves a lot of people with different expertise.
Therefore, Esther has exhibited teamwork through out her career.
Patient-care is one of the skills that should be practiced b nurses. Patient-care includes showing
compassion, understanding, sympathy and patience with patients. Esther shared one of moments that
she practiced patient care. It was in her 6th year as a nurse. She had just been transferred to her second
hospital. She was assigned to be an operation’s room nurse. She found a child who had undergone brain
surgery. The child could not do anything for himself. He was in a very critical condition that the family
were considering Euthanasia. Esther decided to tend for the patient. She would wash him, feed him,
and give him medicine. She even pleaded for the parents not to allow Euthanasia. She cared for the
child for three week until he died.
As a nurse, one should work for 36 to 40 hours a week. As Esther in a nurse in the operations
department, she only works day shifts. As a charge nurse, she has a lot of activities to do. Over time,
she has learned how to manage time. She confesses that it was difficult when she was starting to
practice her career but time management came with the experience (Abd-Elmoghith, 2019). She is
able To coordinate the activities of different operating rooms concurrently. According to her, time
management skills grow over time.
The inter-professional model of nursing promotes communication. According to Esther, the model
has made communication easier in hospitals. For example, in an operating room, the model requires all
the medical practitioners involved to introduce themselves during pre-op. They should also review the
surgery after its completed. This enables them to identify the processes that were successful and those
that should be improved. “ A checklist for pre-op should be made and the circulating registered
nurse should communicate about any missing documents from the chart before being taken
to the operation to reduce the possibility of repeating past mistakes”, Esther said.
