Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of catheter sensitization
education in the practice of nurses. The papers reviewed several research papers that
have been conducted regarding reducing catheter associated urinary tract infections.
Catheter associated urinary tract infections are infections that occur as a result of
prolonged use or wrong use of catheters. Catheter associated urinary tract infections
are increasing in numbers in hospitals worldwide. According to studies, urinary tract
infections are among the primary cause infections in hospitals today. Through
reviewing the research papers, we can see that education and training for nurses play a
role in reducing the number of infections. Implementation of clinical practice
guidelines also reduce the number of infections. In a nutshell, we can conclude that
promoting education and training about catheters and implementing clinical
guidelines can help in reducing the rats of catheter associated urinary tract infections.
This paper is relevant to clinical practice as it highlights how nurses can reduce the
catheter associated infections. It also adds knowledge to the filed of nursing.
Introduction
Purpose of the integrative review
An integrative review is a paper written to review the existing literature in a
systematic process. In this case, this integrative review is written for the purpose of
preparing a scholarly paper in nursing. It will revolve around collection, classification
and analysis of research evidence on the topic being reviewed. The paper will
promote evidence-based practice in the field of nursing. In this paper, several research
papers that have been compiled in the recent past will be analyzed. Their purpose and
gaps will be identified. That will help to come up with the gap that should be covered
when writing the scholarly paper. It will also outline how the knowledge achieved
,from the analysis should be used in promoting evidence-based practice and the
projected results.
Topic of interest
The topic of interest in this integrative paper is catheter associated urinary tract
infections. The topic is related to problems faced in clinical practice and nursing
issues.
Research question
The research question being studied is “In hospitalized geriatric patients (P), does
incorporating educational strategies into the patient’s plan of care and use of
medicated urinary catheters (I), compared to use of a medicated urinary catheter alone
(C), decrease the incidence of inpatient catheter-associated urinary tract infections
(CAUTI’s) (O) over a six-month period (T).”
Problem statement
Due to the rising number of patients in the hospitals, there is a rise in the number
of patients with adverse health issues has also increased. That has resulted to more
patients being catheterized in the hospitals. If patients are catheterized in the wrong
way or for the wrong reasons, they may develop complexities studies have shown that
there is a rise in the number of people contracting catheter associated urinary tract
infections due to wrong catheterization. It has been determined that such errors occur
due to lack of knowledge or education on how to conduct catheterization effectively.
In this study, we will evaluate different research papers that have been conducted on
the topic. We will evaluate the impact of catheter sensitization education in reducing
the number of catheter associated urinary tract infections.
, Variables of Interest
The target population for the study is the practicing nurses. As the study is going
to evaluate how education training on nurses will help to reduces the number of
catheter associated urinary tract infections. Therefore, the nurses become the target
population of the study. The setting of the research will be a hospital. This is the place
where the research is relevant and will be carried out. This is because both the nurses
and the patients are found in a hospital. The intervening variable for the study is
catheter sensitization education. The education will differentiate how nurses who have
acquired it practice differently from the nurses who have not be trained. Therefore, the
study will determine how catheter sensitization education will affect the rates of
patients having catheter associated urinary tract infections.
In this study, several concepts will be used. The first concept will be geriatric
patients. This are patients who are elderly and need a lot of patient-care. Another
concept will be the medicated urinary catheters. Medicated urinary catheters are
flexible tubes used to collect urine from the bladder to a drainage bag. Medicated
urinary catheters are recommended if a patient has urinary incontinence, urinary
retention or when they cannot control when they urinate. Nurses will also play a role
in the study. This is because they will determine the effects of education on reducing
the rates of infection of catheter associated urinary tract infections. The last concept
will be catheter associated urinary tract infection. This is an infection that is caused by
wrong or prolonged use of a catheter. It can affect the urethra, bladder, ureter or
kidney.
