Nursing has a lot of specialties. In the MSN program, a nurse is needed to choose
the area that they will specialize in. The choice is influenced by a nurse’s academic
and professional goal. Some of the specialties in nursing are explained below. The
first specialty is a certified nurse midwife. This specialty deals with pregnancy,
postpartum and labor concerns. The second specialty is critical care nurse. Nurses in
this specialty take care of people in critical conditions such as those in the ICUs. A
family nurse practitioner is a nurse who works in the community and promotes health
among families and children. A gerontological nurse practitioner diagnoses health
problems, conducts patient tests, interpret results and develops treatment plans. A
nurse anesthetist helps during surgery preparation and helps the anesthesiologists. A
pediatric nurse practitioner works with sick babies. A psychiatric nurse practitioner
helps people with mental health issues. Those are just but a few in specialties in
nursing (Hines, Stolle & Green, 2018).
I want to become a perioperative nurse. This is a nursing specialty that deals with
patients that undergo surgery. A perioperative nurse helps to plan, to execute and
assess the treatment for patients that undergo surgery. Such a nurse can work in a
hospital surgical department or in an ambulatory surgery unit. A perioperative nurse
works with patients before their surgery and after their surgery to ensure that they
recover well. They help in setting up the operating room and they help during the
surgery. Therefore, they have responsibilities in the preoperative , intraoperative and
postoperative phases of surgery (Stephens, Smith & Cherry, 2017). In the
postanesthesia care unit, they work with the nurse anesthetic to ensure that the patient
recovers from the effects of the operating procedure.
When making my choice, I had two options to choose from . I wanted to become
a perioperative nurse of a nurse anesthetic. I wanted to care for people before and
after surgeries as it is a difficult time for the patient and their friends and family. After
