Assignment 1
Semester 1
Due March 2026
, Question 1:
Two Main Benefits of Delegating Routine Tasks to Legal Assistants
Delegating routine administrative and basic legal tasks to trained legal assistants offers
significant advantages for a legal practice. First, it enhances efficiency. When attorneys
can offload tasks such as drafting standard correspondence, managing calendars, filing
court documents, or conducting initial client interviews, they are free to concentrate on
more complex legal work that requires their specialized judgment. This includes
strategizing cases, appearing in court, or negotiating settlements. For example, a law
firm might observe a notable reduction in file turnaround time, perhaps by as much as
30%, if legal assistants manage the drafting of summonses and coordinate with sheriffs.
This division of labor allows the practice to process cases more swiftly and handle a
larger caseload effectively.
Second, it directly contributes to increased affordability and accessibility of legal
services. Clients pay considerably less for tasks performed by a legal assistant
compared to an attorney, making legal assistance more attainable for a wider segment
of the population. This cost-effectiveness means that fundamental legal services, which
might otherwise be prohibitively expensive, become accessible without compromising
the overall quality of representation. For instance, drafting a deed of settlement by a
legal assistant might cost R450, whereas an attorney performing the same task could
charge R1,800. This reduction in cost is crucial for improving access to justice,
particularly for individuals who might be financially marginalized.
