2. CASE INTRODUCTION
J.D. is a 25-year-old previously healthy male who presents to the primary care clinic with a 3-
day history of an acute, generalized erythematous maculopapular rash. The rash began on his trunk
and has progressively spread to involve his upper and lower extremities. He reports associated mild
prodromal symptoms including low-grade fever (100.2°F), generalized fatigue, and mild headache.
,The patient is concerned about the rapid progression of the rash and its appearance, though it is
only mildly pruritic. He reports a possible exposure to a friend who had a similar "viral illness with
rash" approximately two weeks ago. This case requires a comprehensive evaluation to determine
the etiology of the rash, rule out serious conditions, and develop an evidence-based management
plan.
