Introduction
I teach at a rural public middle school in . As the PE and Health teacher, I teach
required and elective classes. The district I teach in requires all seventh-grade students to have 9
weeks of health class, but does not require physical education for any of the grades at the middle
school level. PE is an elective that students sign up for, but it is on a first-come, first-served
basis. Other students may not have the space to pick their electives because they are in remedial
classes, such as Math Matters or Literacy Lab. Not all students get movement during the day. As
a PE teacher, with my education comes the knowledge of the benefits of movement for students
throughout the day.
Proposed Capstone Research
Research Topic
The topic of this capstone study is movement in the classroom. Teachers lack the
knowledge and skills to incorporate movement effectively in the classroom. This capstone will
research how to create a PD for teachers to fill this need. This topic aligns with curriculum and
instruction because while the subject between core teachers may be different, there are a variety
of movement activities that can be used in instruction to engage students with different
curriculums. This topic is important to the field of curriculum and instruction because of the
ways it will directly impact teacher effectiveness in the classroom. Incorporating movement in
the classroom can only happen once teachers receive practical, hands-on training on this topic.
Teachers will receive Professional development training to solve the problem of a lack of
movement. Physical activity increases focus and engagement in students. In a study by the
