Research Topic:
In education, social-emotional learning is either forgotten or flies under
the radar in comparison to core subjects like reading, writing and math.
Social-emotional learning is a very important skill for students to have in
school but also beyond the classroom as well. I want to do more research on
professional developments regarding SEL and why it is important for all
teachers to implement this learning in their classroom. By doing this
research, I will be able to create my own professional development with the
purpose of helping teachers implement SEL into their classrooms and how
teaching these topics will support their students' academic and behavioral
needs.
Social-emotional learning aligns with the field of curriculum and
instruction because teaching SEL in the classroom impacts students
behavioral and academic behaviors. In order to expect students to learn, we
first have to address their social-emotional needs and support them how we
can. “By helping students grow in their awareness of themselves and
others, their emotions and how to handle them, we are helping them
achieve academically as well” (Pasi, R. J. (2001)). Students in all grades
struggle with SEL strategies and skills and they often go unseen. Another
reason that social-emotional learning is important to curriculum and
instruction is it helps to foster better relationships between students and
teachers. “Teachers developed greater relational closeness with children
who participated in Banking Time (a set of techniques designed to promote
positive, supportive
relationships through 1-on-1 interactions between teachers and children)
than with children who did not participate” (Driscoll, K. C., Wang, L., Mashburn,
A. J., & Pianta, R. C. (2011)). If teachers are able to promote SEL in their
classrooms,
they will create positive relationships and also encourage students to learn in
the classroom.
