D 180 Educational Research Task 3
Part A:
Alignment and Importance of Topic
The topic that I will be covering is social-emotional learning (SEL), focusing on social
problem-solving. This topic aligns with curriculum and instruction because students need these
skills to navigate social situations in a classroom setting. I am a 6th-grade teacher and have a
total of 75 students. Of the 75 students, 20% can solve a social problem when it arises. When
students cannot figure out how to solve a problem, such as trying to figure out where to find
absent work, they will not be able to solve simple academic tasks either. When they do not have
these skills, they cannot perform academically. “When SEL is implemented correctly, there can
be a dramatic increase in academic performance as a result.” (Kaspar & Masey, 2023). Having
the skills to problem-solve socially allows students to think creatively and flexibly. Students
could have many negative impacts when they do not have these essential skills. “Deficits in
such skills can mean an increased risk of negative outcomes in the short- and long-term around
goal attainment, decision making, conflict resolution, prosocial behavior, and general well-
being.” (Medin & Jutengren, 2020). Students who cannot solve problems cannot make logical
decisions and resolve conflicts.
Problem Statement
Teachers struggle with teaching students basic social-emotional learning skills such as
social problem-solving. This impacts the students because they do not know how to solve a
social problem when it arises. One possible cause of this problem is a lack of training for the
teachers.
