Research Topic
The topic I have chosen for my proposed research is culturally responsive teaching in the
classroom and the effect on student efficacy. This is an important topic for me personally and
professionally as a teacher. As a person of color growing up, I never had teachers that I could
relate to or felt that they connected to my same background or culture. As a teacher and POC, I
am motivated to do better and be better for all students.
This topic aligns with the field of curriculum and instruction for several reasons. First,
culturally responsive teaching involves recognizing and valuing the diverse backgrounds and
experiences of students. “Culturally responsive teaching promotes the success of all students
equally—something that traditional education methods often fall short on. When students’
cultural backgrounds aren’t thoughtfully considered, classrooms suffer from issues like language
barriers, systemic discrimination, and lack of representation” (American University School of
Education, 2019). By exploring the impact of a culturally responsive framework on student
efficacy, the research can contribute insights into developing more inclusive curricula that reflect
the diversity of the student population. Next, understanding how a culturally responsive
framework influences student efficacy can shed light on effective instructional strategies.
Educators may need to adapt their teaching methods to better engage students from various
cultural backgrounds, which can inform the development of more effective instructional
practices within the curriculum. “Culturally responsive teachers connect academic concepts to
the everyday lives of their students, a strategy that makes learning experiences more personally
meaningful, engaging, and effective” (Muniz, 2019). Last, examining the effects of cultural
responsiveness on student efficacy can help identify potential disparities and contribute to the
