The research topic I have chosen is applied research to create an educational

tool to help teachers make a classroom teaching matrix during the beginning

stages of implementing PBIS. During the beginning stages of PBIS, teachers need to

create a teaching matrix that will help students know what is expected of them.

Our school is struggling in certain areas of school with behavior and one is within

the classroom. While the teachers do a good job with setting rules in their

classroom, we want the students to be engaged in the making of this matrix that

will then be shared with families. This tool will be an integral part of helping

teachers build a foundation with the new implementation of PBIS. This topic will

align with my field of curriculum and instruction because students learn the most

from the teacher/classroom that they are in the longest each day. This tool will be

implemented by the teacher that is with the student the most and it will become

the foundation for the classroom expectation. Not only does this help the student

know what is expected of them, but the teacher has followed the teaching that they

will receive on this topic during professional development before school starts. We

continue to see problems arising in the classroom dealing with respect,

responsibility and right choices. This is where our focus will be when teachers are

utilizing this tool in their classrooms. This is very important to my field of

curriculum and instruction because this is one of the very first steps that will be

taken while rolling out the PBIS program. Our teachers need to start very basic and

this allows them to start right from the beginning with the simple task of what

expectations do they want in their classroom to set the tone for the year.

Establishing common Social Emotional Behavior expectations promotes a positive,

predictable, and safe environment for learning ( Alter, P., & Haydon, T., 2017). A

teaching matrix can be a helpful tool for establishing common SEB expectations in

the classroom. A teaching matrix identifies the expectations (as row headers),
