Gerald Tan. 1993. The Next NICs of Asia.
Tan explores the possibility of several Asian countries becoming NICs by evaluating their success
across a range of criteria. Malaysia is seen as a possible new NIC due to its high economic
growth, strong infrastructure and increased industrial expansion. Tan expresses concerns,
however, about Malaysia’s corruption and nepotism. Thailand is also listed as a possible new NIC.
This is due to its increased focus on exports. Thailand, however, su ers from lower education
rates and higher debt. China is also brie y explored as an NIC. Tan concludes by stating that it
would be di cult for any of the aforementioned countries to attain NIC status.
