Question 1
In your own words, explain the two key advantages that the Kansas law firm
experienced after introducing trained non-lawyers to perform routine legal
tasks. (4)
Increased Profitability and Capacity: The law firm could take on more work because
routine tasks were performed by non-lawyers, freeing up the lawyers' time.
More Affordable Services for Clients: The firm could offer cheaper legal services to
their clients because the non-lawyers worked at a lower rate than the highly-paid
lawyers, meaning the same services could be offered for less. (PAR1501/1, Study Unit
1, p. 1)
The law firm became more efficient because routine legal work was done by trained
non-lawyers instead of highly paid lawyers. These non-lawyers handled tasks such as
responding to enquiries, completing standard forms and managing schedules. This
allowed lawyers to focus on more complex legal work (PAR1501 Study Unit 1).
And the use of trained non-lawyers reduced the cost of legal services for clients.
Because these workers were paid less than lawyers, the firm could offer legal services
at lower rates while still taking on more work. This made the law firm more profitable
and allowed more people to afford legal assistance (PAR1501 Study Unit 1).
