, Assignment: The Mechanics and Nuances of Human Communication
1. Introduction: More Than Just Words
Communication is often oversimplified as the act of speaking. In reality, it is a complex,
transactional process where we negotiate meaning. Whether it is a subtle arch of an
eyebrow or a 500-page novel, communication is the primary tool we use to bridge the gap
between two individual minds.
2. The Communication Process Model
To understand how communication fails, we first have to understand how it is supposed to
work. Most interactions follow a specific cycle:
The Sender & Encoding: The person with the idea translates their thoughts into a "code"
(language, gesture, or image).
The Message & Channel: The information is sent via a medium (face-to-face, email, or
phone).
The Receiver & Decoding: The person on the other end interprets the code based on their
own experiences and biases.
Feedback: The receiver responds, confirming whether the message was understood or
mangled.
3. The Three Pillars of Message Delivery
In a famous (and often misunderstood) study, researcher Albert Mehrabian pointed out that
when we talk about feelings and attitudes, the "how" matters more than the "what."
Component Impact Weight Description
Verbal 7%. The actual words used.
Vocal 38% Tone, pitch, speed and volume
Visual 55%. Body language, eye contact, and facial expressions.
