GENERAL PHYSIOLOGY
BODY FLUID COMPARTMENTS (PART-1)
• Body fluid compartments
Total body weight -60% of body weight
(TBW)
In females
• deference: 70 Kgs healthy man GTBW → 55%
↳ 422 (TBW) Reason: females have
greater % age of fat
• TBW (2 Compartments) than males, and fat

Plasma Cells like others ◦ It is eg; • Pleural fluid
• Synovial fluid
found in cavities.
• Aqueous humor
, # Reasoning ⇒ Infants are more prone to dehydration.
why?
• Body surface area : volume is higher.
• ECF : Icf volume is high in infants **IMI
Infants → ICF less Adults ⇒ ICF more
# Measurement of the body fluids
methods Indicators
• Indicator dilution method (dye dilution method)
Principle: fixed amt ◦ of indicator is diluted ☆ dispersed
in fluid..
☐→indicator (IL)
more dilute
2L 10L
• A known initial volume (I) of indicator is injected into the
compartment ◦
• Indicator will evenly dispersed into the compartment.
(diluted by the compartment).
Take a sample from that compartment 8 measure the
concentration (c) of the indicator.
◦ Indicator should uniformly distribute on the compartment
☆ it should not leave the compartment.
• Indicator should not bind with proteins €
Should remain free.
, v T
Initial volume of indicator
Volume of
compartment conc. of indicator after
dispersion.
V=I-A A = ant. of indicator that leaves
C the compartment.
* Indicators used are:
I TBW: To measure total body water indicator should
(Total body water) easily class the membranes as if the
membrane is non existing.
Deuterium (120), tritium (3H20), antipyrine or
aminopyrine.
] ECF volume: non metabolisable saccharides.
↳ inulin (fructo polysaccharide), sucrose, mannitol.
iii) Icf volume:- can't be measured delectly.GE is
measured Indirectly.
ICE (TBW)-(ECF)
if Plasma volume: ↳ Evan's Blue (T-1824)
↳ radiolabbelled albumin (3' I 125 ).
☑ Red all volume:
↳ s'Cr - Tagging (RBC's Tagged 8 dispersed
(Chromium)
