Question 1: Foundations of Education (25 marks)
1.1 Define the concept of 'education' and distinguish it from 'schooling'. (10 marks)
Education is a broad, lifelong process through which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values,
attitudes, and understanding. It encompasses formal, non-formal, and informal learning that takes
place across all contexts and throughout a person's entire life. Dewey (1916) defined education as
the reconstruction or reorganisation of experience that adds to the meaning of experience and
increases one's ability to direct the course of subsequent experience.

Schooling, by contrast, refers specifically to the structured, institutionalised form of education that
takes place within school systems, typically governed by a curriculum, timetable, and assessment
regime. While schooling is one important vehicle for education, it represents only a fraction of the
total educational experience of an individual.

Key distinctions between education and schooling:

• Education is lifelong and continuous; schooling is time-bound and age-structured.
• Education can occur in any context (home, workplace, community); schooling is confined to
formal institutions.
• Education is self-directed and intrinsically motivated in many instances; schooling is
externally structured and often extrinsically motivated through grades and credentials.
• Education addresses the holistic development of the person; schooling often focuses on
academic achievement and measurable outcomes.
• Education may challenge dominant social norms; schooling often reinforces and reproduces
existing social structures (Bourdieu & Passeron, 1977).

In summary, all schooling involves education, but not all education involves schooling. A
comprehensive understanding of education must therefore extend beyond the classroom to recognise
the broader social, cultural, and experiential dimensions of human learning and development.

1.2 Discuss the role of education in promoting social justice and equity. (15 marks)
Education plays a fundamental role in both reflecting and shaping the social conditions of a given
society. From a social justice perspective, education is regarded as a critical mechanism for reducing
inequality, disrupting cycles of poverty, and ensuring that all citizens have equitable access to
opportunities regardless of race, class, gender, disability, or geographic location.
