In 1869, Friedrich Miescher working with blood cells which are the
major component of pus infection.
Chemically nuclein has high Phosphorus content, hence has
acidic property. there are two kinds of nucleic acids ie. DNA(
deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid)
Griffith’sexperiment
In 1928, Frederick Griffith performed an experiment
on bacterium
Streptococcus pneumoniae causes pneumonia in
humans and other mammals.
He used two strains of streptcoccus to find a cure for
pneumonia.
The two strains used were,S strain and R strain
, Avery ,M.MacLeod and MacCarty Expt
In 1944, Ostwald T Avery ,Colin M.MacLeod and
Maclyn MacCarty first evidenced to prove that the DNA
is a genetic material.
They purified DNA,RNA,Proteins and other materials
from cell and mixed with heat killed S strain and R
strain separately to detect which one could transform
living R cell into S cells.
Only DNA was able to transform harmless strain R into
deadly strain S.
These experiments proved that the transforming
principle is DNA .
