, 1. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is to examine how political stories are covered in the South
African print media through a content analysis of the Mail & Guardian newspaper.
Newspapers play an important role in informing the public about political
developments and shaping public debate about governance, leadership and policy
issues. The way political stories are selected, presented and framed by the media
may influence how readers understand political events and actors in society. This
study therefore seeks to analyse how political stories are reported in the selected
newspaper and to identify patterns in the coverage of political issues.
The Mail & Guardian is one of the well-known investigative newspapers in South
Africa and is widely recognised for its in-depth reporting on political matters,
governance and public accountability. Because of its focus on investigative
journalism and political reporting, the newspaper provides a useful source for
analysing how political stories are presented to the public.
The study will use content analysis to examine selected issues of the Mail &
Guardian. This method allows the researcher to systematically analyse written
content in order to identify recurring themes, the placement of political stories, and
the tone of coverage. The following sections of the research proposal outline the
research problem, the subproblems of the study, and the approach that will be used
to analyse the newspaper content.
2. RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT / MAIN ISSUE
Political reporting has an important influence on how citizens understand political
events and issues in South Africa. Newspapers play a key role in informing the
public, but they do not always present political stories in the same way. Some
newspapers may publish more political news than others, while the placement of
these stories in the newspaper can also differ. In some cases, political stories appear
on the front page and receive strong attention, while in other cases they are placed
deeper inside the newspaper where they receive less visibility.
