, 1. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is to examine how political stories are reported in South
African print media through a content analysis of the Mail & Guardian newspaper.
Newspapers play an important role in informing the public about political
developments in the country. They also influence how people think about
governance, leadership and public policy. The way in which political stories are
selected and presented can shape how readers understand political events and the
actions of political leaders. Because of this influence, it is important to study how
newspapers report on political matters. This study therefore aims to analyse the
manner in which political stories appear in the selected newspaper and to identify
patterns in the reporting of political issues.
The Mail & Guardian is widely known in South Africa for its investigative journalism
and detailed political reporting. The newspaper often focuses on matters related to
governance, accountability and public interest issues. For this reason it provides a
valuable source for examining how political stories are communicated to the public.
This study will make use of content analysis to examine selected issues of the Mail &
Guardian. Content analysis allows a researcher to study written material in a
structured way in order to identify recurring themes, the position of political stories in
the newspaper and the tone used in the coverage. The next sections of the research
proposal explain the research problem, the subproblems of the study and the
method that will be used to analyse the newspaper content.
2. RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT / MAIN ISSUE
Political news plays a strong role in shaping how people in South Africa understand
political events and public issues. Newspapers are an important source of
information for citizens because they report on political developments and explain
what is happening in the country. However, newspapers do not always report
political stories in the same manner. Some newspapers publish many political
articles, while others give less space to political news.
