, AFL1501 SEMESTER 1 ASSIGNMENT 5 2026
DUE 2 JUNE 2026
Section 1: Overall Module Reflection
Question 1
Before I started AFL1501, I thought language was simply a tool for communication. I
believed it was just words we use to speak to each other. I did not think deeply about
how language connects to who we are as people. My understanding was very basic and
surface level.
This module has completely changed my thinking. I learned that language is not just
about grammar and vocabulary. It is deeply connected to our identity, our culture, and
our sense of belonging. When I speak my home language, I am not just communicating.
I am expressing a part of my soul that English cannot fully capture. I now understand
why my grandmother insists on speaking our mother tongue at family gatherings. She is
preserving something precious.
What stood out as most meaningful to me was learning about the concept of Ubuntu
through language. The way we greet each other, the respect we show through forms of
address like Mama and Baba, these are not just words. They carry deep cultural values
of respect and community. I realised that language can build bridges between people or
create walls. When someone greets me in my own language, I feel seen and respected.
