, 1.1 Relationship conflicts
Relationship conflicts arise when negative emotions, poor communication,
stereotypes or repetitive behaviour create tension between individuals who interact
with each other. In the project team described in the scenario, relationship conflict
may occur because some team members believe that personal relationships
influence important decisions. When certain members feel that colleagues favour
friends or close associates, this can lead to feelings of resentment, mistrust and
hostility within the team. As a result, communication between team members may
become strained and unproductive.
Relationship conflict can also develop if individuals repeatedly behave in ways that
frustrate others. For example, if certain members constantly ignore the opinions of
others during meetings or show disrespectful behaviour, it can create a cycle of
negative interactions. These negative emotions may escalate the conflict and make it
difficult for the team to work together effectively. In this situation, team members may
begin to focus more on personal disagreements rather than on achieving the goals of
the project.
Furthermore, poor communication can worsen relationship conflict.
Misunderstandings may arise when people do not clearly express their ideas or
when they interpret comments in a negative way. This can create unnecessary
tension and damage working relationships. If these conflicts are not addressed, they
may escalate and reduce team cooperation and productivity. Relationship conflicts
therefore require open communication and mutual respect among team members in
order to restore a positive working environment (POL2602 Study Guide, 2022).
1.2 Value conflicts
Value conflicts occur when individuals have different belief systems about what is
right or wrong, fair or unfair. These beliefs influence how people interpret situations
and make decisions. In the project team described in the scenario, value conflict may
arise because team members have different priorities and expectations regarding
how the project should be managed.
