online harassment. Possible forms of harassment that have been in records include physical
threats, stalking, sexual harassment, offensive name-calling, purposeful embarrassment, and
sustained harassment. It surprises me more than online harassment has only recorded an increase
in its rating. According to Pew Research Centre, online harassment has increased from 15% of
online users in 2017 to almost double (25%) today. Referring to Pew Research Centre studies,
most online harassment cases have been recorded from the political environment.
Twenty percent of Americans, representing fifty percent of people who have been
harassed online, confess that they have received online harassment due to their political views.
This records an increase in online harassment based on political matters from 14% to 20% of the
total Americans in the past three years. Beyond politics, it is a shame that ethnic and skin
discrimination has not wholly left people's minds. Pew Research Studies show that Black and
Hispanic shares of online harassment are more likely than the whites to report that they have
been harassed because of their ethnicity and race.
Social media sites have been recorded to be the venue for most online harassment cases.
In Pew Research Center's records, 75% of targets confessed that they were harassed on social
media compared to 25% of harassments that took venue at online forums and discussion sites.
Online harassment never seems to stop or reduce, but only corrective measures are taken. 51% of
Americans suggest that permanent suspension of users who are found bullying and harassing
others is the best weapon against online harassment.
