Introduction
Conflict is a common occurrence in organisations where individuals work together to
achieve shared goals. Differences in personalities, values, interests, and organisational
structures can create tension that affects productivity and teamwork. According to
Robbins and Judge (2019), conflict arises when individuals perceive that others have
negatively affected or are about to negatively affect something they value. The scenario
provided describes a team experiencing disagreements due to interpersonal
relationships, differing values, conflicting information, and structural organisational
issues. This essay discusses five major causes of conflict and explains how each may
manifest within the situation described.
1.1 Relationship Conflicts
Relationship conflict refers to disagreements that arise from interpersonal
incompatibilities between individuals. These conflicts are often emotional and involve
feelings such as anger, mistrust, frustration, or resentment (De Dreu & Weingart, 2003).
In the scenario, relationship conflicts may occur because some team members believe
that personal relationships are influencing decisions within the group. When
employees perceive that colleagues receive favourable treatment due to friendships or
alliances, resentment can develop. This can lead to tension, mistrust, and hostility
among team members.
Relationship conflicts often result in poor communication and reduced cooperation.
Members may avoid interacting with one another or may respond defensively during
discussions. Instead of focusing on solving problems or completing tasks, employees
become preoccupied with personal disagreements.
