Research Question
Can globalization be utilized to reduce rapid population growth, a key challenge to sustainable
urban developments?
Keivani, R. (2010). A review of the main challenges to urban sustainability. International
Journal of Urban Sustainable Development, 1(2).
The article examines some of the key challenges to achieving urban sustainability
through a literature review design where the author uses existing data to make inferences
and develop their arguments. The author examines the role of cities and urban centers in
terms of their economic contributions to the society with a focus on how this economic
effect impacts urban areas. The paper further examines how globalization has affected the
development of urban areas whereby the author suggests that the Northern regions are
scaling down their manufacturing industries while Southern regions are expanding these
industries. Some of the challenges highlighted in this paper as a result of growing
economies include pollution, rapid population growth, slum dwellings, as well as access
to basic amenities. The paper is crucial in understanding how globalization affects urban
sustainability and therefore identify the possible remedies to the challenges that
globalization raises or even how globalization can be manipulated to achieve the goals of
urban sustainability.
