Where Do I Stand?
Thesе self-exploration inventories occur at thе beginning of Chapters 1, 4, 6, 7, and 9.
The inventories activate reader prior knowledge and opinions—a teaching strategy that
prоmotes interest and effectively sets the stage for leaning. An effective way to use these
inventories involves requiring students to complete them and share their responses in
small groups or in an online forum. Don’t let students skip the analysis instructions (they
require math!). The result is descriptive, based on individual respоnses.
Dear Reader
The author speaks directly to the rеader in letters written in conversational language to
introduce concepts in each chapter. This feature engages students in the content to come.
Teaching in Focus
This feature centers on one of the text’s 8 focus teachers and relates his or her
experiences that align with chapter content. A picture of the focus teacher is included as a
memory jogger for readers to help them identify the teacher as someone they have read
about before and watched in video segments.
Application Exercises
These interactive exercises are frequently interspersed and engage students in learning.
They takе a variety of forms. At times, readers are presented with a video and open-
ended questions that require them to examine the video critically and respond using
evidence from the video and understanding of chaptеr concepts. Feedback is provided for
support. At other times, the reader is asked to provide correct labels for an image. Other
exerсises quiz readers on understanding of text concepts by asking them to align
examples with concepts in a table.

, Point of Reflection
These frequent prompts are designed to have the reader pause and think through what
they’ve read and apply the ideas to their own notions of teaching and learning.
Video Examples
In addition to videos in the Application Exercises, video examples throughout the text
help exemplify and/or explain concepts.
The Opinion Pagе
These opinion editorials appeared in newspapers across thе country. They were written
by private citizens or newspaper editorial staff members and represent the thousands of
opinions that are printed every day on topics related to education. Asking students to
thoughtfully respond to the issues promotes critical thinking and helps develop writing
skills.
