1. Hedges
Hedges are linear plantings used to divide and define different areas within a
garden. They act as natural boundaries, create privacy, and protect the garden
from wind. Hedges may be made from flowering or nonflowering shrubs,
depending on the design purpose.
Example plants: Bougainvillea spp., Duranta spp., Acacia spp., Euphorbia spp.,
Casuarina spp., Thuja spp., Croton spp.
2. Edges & Edging
Edges are materials or plants used to separate garden beds from lawns, paths,
or borders. They keep spaces neat and defined. Edging may be created by short
growing plants, stones, bricks, tiles, or other garden materials. Foliage edges
add texture and visual contrast.
Example plants for edging: Amaranthus spp., Pelia spp., Sansiviera spp.,
Tradescantia spp., Coleus spp., Begonia spp.
3. Lawn
A lawn is an open green area covered with closely trimmed grass. It forms the
central open space of a garden, offering a visual rest, recreational space, and a
backdrop for other plantings. Lawns enhance symmetry and make the garden
appear larger and wellmaintained.
Example : Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, Kentucky Bluegrass
