, Calvinism - ANSTheological teaching attributed to John Calvin (reformer
1509-1564). Emphasizes the sovereignty of God, the depravity of
humankind, and predestination (each person's ultimate destiny is
foreordained). The five points of Calvinism, often called the TULIP list, are:
~ Total depravity (Original sin makes everyone corrupt and unable to know
or obey God.).
~ Unconditional election (God alone chooses who will be saved.).
~ Limited atonement (Christ died only for those destined to be saved.).
~ Irresistible grace (If God chooses a person to be saved, he or she cannot
resist.).
~ Perseverance of the Saints (Those whom God chooses will always
remain saved.).
Calvin believed that God's absolute sovereignty demanded absolute
predestination of those who should be saved and who should be lost. He
failed to see that God is sovereign over himself and therefore able to give
human beings true free will.
