What is facilitated diffusion?
-does not require energy
-substances cannot move on its own, in or out of the cell, so
it uses a carrier (ex: hormone, enzyme, protein)
What is osmosis?
-does not require energy
-movement of water from an area low in solutes to an area
high in solutes
What is the G0 phase of the cell cycle?
remission/resting phase
What are the different types of bacteria?
gram positive, gram negative (harder to kill or treat because
of double helix wall), aerobic (need oxygen to survive),
anaerobic (doesn't need oxygen to survive)
What are community-associated infections?
An infection that is acquired by a person who has not been
hospitalized or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis,
surgery, catheterization) within the past year
What are health-care associated infections (nosocomial
infections)?
-contracted in a hospital or institutional setting
, -were not present or incubating in the patient on admission to
the facility
-occurs more than 48 hours after admission
-more difficult to treat because causative microorganisms
are often drug resistant and the most virulent
-MRSA is most common
How do you prevent health-care associated infections?
-handwashing
-antiseptics
-disinfectants
What are disinfectants?
-kills organisms
-used only on nonliving objects
-bactericidal agent
What are antiseptics?
-generally only inhibits the growth of microorganisms but does
not necessarily kill them
-applied exclusively to living tissue/skin
-bacteriostatic agents
What is empiric therapy?
treatment of an infection before specific culture information has
been reported or obtained (broad-spectrum antibiotic)
What is definitive therapy?
