Brussels is the capital of Belgium
It was a small country which is smaller in area than Haryana
It has borders with France, Netherlands, Germany and
Luxembourg
It has population little over 1 crore (Half of that of Haryana)
POPULATION BREAKDOWN (WHOLE COUNTRY) :-
59% lived in Flemish Region & spoke Dutch
41% lived in Wallonia Region & spoke French
1% were Germans
POPULATION BREAKDOWN (BRUSSELS)
80% were French Speaking (These people were richer than Dutch)
20% were Dutch Speaking (These people got the benefit of
education and economic development much later than the
French)
WHAT THIS LEAD TO?
This lead to tensions between French and Dutch especially in
capital city of Brussels as Dutch being majority in the country was
a minority in the capital.
, 2. SRI LANKA :-
It is an island nation which is just a few kilometers away from
coast of Tamil Nadu
It has 2 Crore population (Same as that of Haryana)
POPULATION BREAKDOWN :-
74% were Sinhala speakers who were mostly Buddhists
18% were Tamil speakers who were mostly Hindus and Muslims
o 13% were Sri Lankan Tamils who lived in North and Eastern
part of Sri Lanka
o 5% were Indian Tamils who forefathers had come from India
as Plantation Workers during Colonial Period

Sinhalese
Dutch could take advantage of its numeric majority & force its will on the
French and Germans. This could lead to messy partition of the country &
both the communities would fight for the capital city of Brussels.
On the other hand, Sinhala could impose its will on the entire country as
they had an even bigger majority in the country.
MAJORITARIANISM IN SRI LANKA :-
Sri Lankans got independence in the year 1948
Sinhala’s wanted to secure their dominance over the government
After the elections, they became the ruling party and became
powerful.
