In the short story The Happy Prince it shows how the characters change into
different people. The Happy Prince is written by Oscar Wilde and is about a Prince
statue full of jewels and a bird. In the story the characters change and develop into
loving and caring people, it also shows how people will judge you on your
appearance and how you look. The bird goes from being determined to loving, the
Prince goes from being sad and beautiful to thankful and dull looking, and the city’s
people change from loving and idolising the statute to being disgusted by it and
throwing it out.
The bird changes from being determined to loving, caring, sympathetic and
empathetic. When the bird first meets the Prince he is on a mission to get Egypt to
join his friends, but he stays with the Prince because of how sad and lonely he is.
Eventually the bird was supposed to leave to go Egypt but in the end he loved the
Prince too much to leave. This is shown in the second last page where it says “He
did not leave the Prince, because he loved him too much. But he was dying.” In the
quote shown, it proves that the bird loves the Prince as it says and how he also
stayed with him. But it also shows how much the bird has changed in terms of
sympathy, and empathy.
The Prince changes from being sad, shiny and full of jewels to being happy, giving
and very dull looking. When the Prince first met the bird he was very sad and
depressed, but after spending time with the bird and giving away his jewels, he
became more happy and loving. The Prince’s sadness is shown in the first page
where it says “ Tears ran down his golden face.” and it shows his loving ness on the
second last page where it says “ Kiss me, because I love you.” The quote shows
how much the Prince has changed since the start of the story. He went from a sad
and eye-pleasing statue to a happy and loving character.
