, A COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY INTERVENTION TO ADDRESS YOUTH GANG
VIOLENCE IN SESHEGO TOWNSHIP, LIMPOPO
INTRODUCTION
Many communities experience social problems that affect the safety and wellbeing of
the people who live there. In South Africa, many families face daily challenges such
as violence, poverty, substance abuse, and weak support systems. These conditions
place pressure on individuals and make it difficult for communities to develop in a
healthy way. Community psychology encourages people to understand that these
problems are not only personal struggles. They are often linked to social conditions
and the environment in which people live. The field also encourages people in
communities to work together and support one another in order to improve their
living conditions and strengthen their sense of belonging.
In my community, many people find it difficult to access emotional support when they
face personal problems such as family conflict, unemployment, or gender based
violence. Many individuals suffer in silence because they do not know where to find
help or guidance. This situation often leaves people feeling alone and overwhelmed.
Seeing these struggles has helped me understand how important strong community
support systems are. This assignment discusses a challenge in my community and
considers how community psychology ideas can guide a small project to support
vulnerable people and strengthen support within the community.
CHALLENGE IN MY COMMUNITY
The community that I focus on is Seshego township in Polokwane in Limpopo
Province. Seshego is a large township situated close to the city of Polokwane. Many
families living in this area face difficult social and economic conditions. High
unemployment, poverty, and a shortage of safe recreational spaces for young people
are common challenges in the community. These circumstances often place young
people in situations where they become vulnerable to risky behaviour and negative
influences. One of the major problems currently affecting the area is gang related
violence among the youth.
