REACTIONS
, Antigen – Antibody Reaction:
• The interaction between antigens and antibodies is called
Antigen-Antibody (Ag-Ab) reaction; the reaction form the basis
for humoral immunity or antibody mediated immunity
• Antigen – Antibody reaction occur in three stages
• Primary stage: Formation of Ag-Ab complex
• Secondary stage: visible reaction, like precipitation, agglutination
• Tertiary stage: destruction of Ag or its neutralization
, Use of Ag-Ab Reaction
• In the body: forms the basis of antibody mediated immune response
against infectious antigens; and tissue injury like hypersensitivity and
autoimmunity
• In Laboratory Investigation:
• Diagnosis of infection
• Identification of infectious agents and difference between non-infectious
antigen; quantification of antigen or antibody
