NOTES
1. Definition
Stroke (Cerebrovascular Accident) is the sudden loss of brain
function caused by interruption of cerebral blood flow, resulting in
neurologic deficits lasting ≥24 hours or causing death.
2. Types of Stroke
1. Ischemic Stroke (≈85%)
Caused by blocked cerebral artery.
Subtypes:
• Thrombotic stroke – clot forms in cerebral artery
• Embolic stroke – clot travels from heart or elsewhere
• Lacunar stroke – small vessel occlusion
Common causes:
• Atherosclerosis
• Atrial fibrillation
• Carotid artery disease
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke (≈15%)

Caused by ruptured blood vessel → bleeding in brain.
Types:
• Intracerebral hemorrhage
• Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Common causes:
• Hypertension
• Cerebral aneurysm
• AV malformation
• Head trauma
3. Risk Factors
Non-modifiable
• Age >55
• Male sex
• Family history
• Previous stroke/TIA
Modifiable
• Hypertension (most important)
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Obesity
• Hyperlipidemia
• Alcohol abuse
• Atrial fibrillation
• Sedentary lifestyle
