1. Definition of Stroke
A stroke, also called Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), occurs when
blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cell damage or
death.
Stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment to
prevent permanent brain injury.
2. Types of Stroke
There are two main types of stroke.
Type Description
Ischemic Stroke Caused by blockage of blood flow to the brain
Hemorrhagic Stroke Caused by bleeding in the brain
1. Ischemic Stroke
Accounts for about 80–85% of strokes.
Causes include:
• Blood clot (thrombus)
• Embolism

Subtypes:
• Thrombotic stroke
• Embolic stroke
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke
Occurs when a blood vessel ruptures in the brain.
Common causes:
• Hypertension
• Brain aneurysm
• Trauma
• Arteriovenous malformation
3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
A TIA is a temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain.
Characteristics:
• Symptoms resolve within 24 hours
• Often called a “mini-stroke”
• Major warning sign of future stroke
