GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING RESEARCH PROPOSALS
AND DISSERTATIONS

,FOREWORD
Research forms a key component of the mandate of the college and is a compulsory requirement
for students undertaking diploma and higher diploma programs. Over time, the institution has
strengthened its commitment to promoting research and innovation among both staff and
students. To support this objective, the college has developed research guidelines that provide
direction on how research proposals and dissertations should be prepared.
These guidelines aim to assist students, supervisors, lecturers, heads of departments, and college
principals in ensuring consistency when preparing research documents. Although various
academic disciplines may have unique requirements, the structure outlined in this document
highlights the essential components that should appear in a research proposal and dissertation.
The format presented here should serve as a guide that supervisors and students can adapt where
necessary. However, departments are encouraged to follow the recommended structure as closely
as possible. Adhering to these guidelines helps stakeholders provide the appropriate support to
students during the research process.
It is hoped that this guide will make the research process easier for students and support them in
producing quality research work regardless of their academic department
, INTRODUCTION
This guideline was developed in response to the challenges many students experience when
preparing research proposals and dissertations within the college. Some of the frequently
observed difficulties include:
Selecting titles that are too broad or poorly defined.
Writing unclear problem statements.
Presenting literature reviews that lack coherence or logical flow.
Choosing inappropriate research designs and methodologies.
Issues related to plagiarism.
Although this document may not fully resolve all these challenges, it provides a framework that
helps standardize research practices across the college. It also gives students clear instructions on
how to format their proposals and dissertations while encouraging academic integrity.
