Right. In the crossroads assessment, one of the multiple choice questions was:
“Save the rhino!!!!” My personal opinion on this statement is most closely
described by:
a. Why?
b. Let the people who want to use this resource pay to protect it.
c. We have bigger problems than worrying about rhinos.
d. We must save rhino because their survival is critical for sustaining
healthy ecosystems.
e. We must save the rhinos because it is the right thing to do.
Do remember what option you chose? Well, now we are going to have a real
discussion about this.
As a starting point for this discussion, my preferred answer is: "a. Why?"
Here's what you need to do now:
STEP 1
1. My original answer and why
My original answer to the question “Save the rhino!!!!” was option (d): “We must save
rhino because their survival is critical for sustaining healthy ecosystems.” I chose this
option because I was thinking mainly about the ecological importance of rhinos.
From this perspective, rhinos have instrumental value, meaning that their importance
lies in the role they play within ecosystems. Rhinos contribute to maintaining
biodiversity and help shape vegetation structures in certain habitats. By influencing
plant growth and grazing patterns, they support other species and contribute to the
overall balance of ecosystems. If rhinos were to disappear, the ecological systems
they are part of could become unstable. Therefore, my initial reasoning focused on
the practical environmental benefits that rhinos provide to the broader ecosystem
and to human societies that depend on healthy ecosystems.
2. My current answer and why
