What is Cyberspace Operations? - ✔️✔️o the employment of cyberspace capabilities
where the primary purpose is to achieve objectives in or through cyberspace.
o CO create strategic effects through tactical actions
o CO uses links and nodes located in the physical domains and perform logical
functions to create effects first in cyberspace and then, as needed, in the physical
domains.
How many layers are in Cyberspace Operations and what are they? - ✔️✔️There are 3
layers:
Physical Network Layer: IT devices and infrastructure in the physical domain; consists
of hardware, wired and wireless links, physical storage mediums, and geography.
Logical Layer: Abstracted from the physical layer; based on the logic programming
(code) that drives network components; IP addresses, ports, protocols, services,
operating systems, virtual machines, etc.
Cyber-Persona Layer: Digital representations of an actor or entity's identity in
cyberspace; comprised of user accounts and account roles/relationships; multiple users
may use the same account and a single user may have multiple accounts (social media,
email, banking)
What are the three types of ownership in cyberspace? - ✔️✔️Blue: Cyberspace owned
and/or protected by the US, its mission partners, and the DoD
Grey: Unaffiliated/unaligned cyberspace
Red: Cyberspace owned or controlled by an adversary
How are cyber attacks attributed? - ✔️✔️Attacker's Geographic Location (IP address)
Attacker's Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs)
Attacker's Level of Sophistication
Attacker's Political Goals/Interests
How is Cyberspace Operations (CO) and Information Environment related? -
✔️✔️Basically: CO is an overlapping subset of OIE that can be executed independently
to or in concert with other OIE missions
, More details:
The Relationship of CO to Operations in the Information Environment (OIE). OIE
combines CO with other information activities and capabilities to create effects in
support of joint operations throughout the OE. Cyberspace is a domain through which
other information activities and capabilities may operate. These activities and
capabilities include, but are not limited to, military information support operations,
military deception, public affairs, civil affairs, key leader engagement, and civil-military
operations. CO can be conducted independently or synchronized, integrated, and
deconflicted with other information capabilities and activities for more effective OIE.
What are the three dimensions of the information environment? - ✔️✔️Cognitive
Dimension (Human Centric):
o Human-centric; based on individual attitudes, beliefs, judgment information
processing, decision making, group identity, and norms. How individuals assign
meaning to or interpret images and actions.
Information Dimension (Data Centric):
o Tangible/real-world; material characteristics, both natural and manufactured, of the
that create constraints and freedoms on the people and information systems that
operate in it.
Physical Dimension (Tangible, Real World):
o Data-centric; the informational dimension encompasses where and how information is
collected, processed, stored, disseminated, and protected. It is the dimension where the
C2 of military forces is exercised and where the commander's intent is conveyed.
Actions in this dimension affect the content and flow of information
What are the DoD cyberspace domains and describe them: - ✔️✔️Non-Classified
Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPR):
-Unclassified, up to Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
-Used for daily operations by most DoD members
Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPR):
-Classified, up to SECRET//NOFORN
-Used for OCO/DCO and DoDIN Operations (threat response)
Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS):
-Classified, up to TOP SECRET, all SCI categories
-Used by the Intelligence Community (IC) and for OCO/DCO
