Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the "NEP 2020 and higher education system" in our country
.We all know that a society's economy, social status, acceptance of technology, and healthy human behaviour
are all greatly impacted by higher education. The nation's education department is responsible for increasing
GER so that all citizens can take advantage of higher education possibilities. The current administration
intends to reorganise the Indian education sector by creating a comprehensive National Education Policy 2020.
The main subject of this study is NEP 2020 and how it affects higher education.Numerous prognostic
recommendations are also included in the paper on subjects like creating high-quality universities, more
comprehensive and multidisciplinary education, research and innovation, changing the regulatory framework
for higher education, technology use and integration, online and digital education, and more. NEP-2020 is a
novel and progressive idea that aims to give everyone equitable access to high-quality education. It has both
positive and bad components. Along with highlighting the NEP-2020's advantages and disadvantages for the
higher education system, the report also contains elements of the policy. India 2.0 for the twenty-first century
is the aim. NEP 2020 is primarily a forward-thinking document that fairly assesses the socioeconomic situation
as it stands today as well as its capacity to address upcoming issues. By 2030, it might turn India into a major
centre for education worldwide if effectively executed.

, Introduction
The National Education Policy (NEP 2020) is a significant educational reform initiative introduced in India
on 29th July, 2020 with the aim to bring modern reforms in the Indian education system providing a
comprehensive framework to address the challenges and needs of the 21st century. The NEP 2020 was drafted
by a committee led by former ISRO chief K. Kasturirangan and involved extensive consultations with
stakeholders, experts, and the general public. The NEP 2020 is built on the ideology to transform India into a
'global knowledge superpower,' and with the introduction of NEP 2020, the Ministry of Human Resource
Development was changed into Ministry of Education.
The NEP 2020 embraces all the phases of education, from pre-school to higher education, and it proposes
significant reforms in the education system with a focus on access, equity, quality, affordability,
multidisciplinary education, vocational education, research and innovation, autonomy, and accountability.
Emanated from the principles of inclusiveness, diversity, and excellence, NEP 2020 aims to promote a holistic
and integrated approach to education that emphasizes the development of critical thinking, creativity, and
problem- solving skills. The NEP 2020 also emphasizes on the critical role of teachers in the education system
and proposes significant reforms in teacher education and professional development.
Higher education system basically refers to the tertiary level education that is imparted after 12
years of schooling. This includes undergraduate courses such as bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate courses such
as master’s degrees and doctoral programs, as well as professional courses. The main purpose of Higher
education is to provide employment and career preparation. Students who pursue higher education gain the
knowledge and credentials needed to succeed in the workforce after graduation. It boosts graduates'
employability by offering internships, realworld experience, and networking opportunities.
Objective
1. To examine the implications of the NEP 2020 for transforming the higher education system in India.
2. To assess the strengths and weaknesses of the policy in the context of higher education.
Methodology :-
The approach of this study is analytical and descriptive in nature. In this study , only secondary sources such
as books, existing literature etc were used.
Objective 1:- This section analysis information regarding the features of NEP 2020 for transforming Higher
education system in our country.
The National Education Policy 2020 for higher education seeks to overhaul India’s current higher education
system. This policy prioritises interdisciplinary study, the introduction of new disciplines, and the provision
of course flexibility and new opportunities for students. It strives to raise the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER)
to 50% by 2035 in higher education by offering various entry and exit points and allowing students to select
courses based on their interests and aptitude. The policy proposes the establishment of a National Research
Foundation(NRF), a National Education Technology Forum(NETF),a National Academic Credit Bank (NAC-
Bank) and the establishment of more Higher Education Institutions around the country. The new higher
education regulatory framework will ensure that distinct administrative, accrediting, finance, and academic
standard-setting tasks are executed by separate, autonomous, and empowered authorities. These four
