The aim of this paper is to give an introductory overview of “Social Emo onal Learning and
Mental Health in the higher educa on system’. In recent years, many students in the higher
educa on system have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses.
With the increasing complexi es of the world and the rivalry they face during or before
entering a certain ins tu on is immense, due to which suicide rates and different academic
related problems are increasing. Therefore this study helps us to find ways to promote SEL
and mental health for the wellbeing of the students. It also discusses about the various
agents responsible for maintaining SEL and mental health in the educa on system. In the
long term children with greater Social Emo onal competence are more likely to achieve
success in their academic fields. They also learn to adjust in different situa ons of life .The
study explores the problems related while implemen ng SEL and Mental health in the
educa onal ins tu ons and also discusses the sugges on that should be taken for the
success of the programs associated with it .

Introduc on
Social emo onal learning and the relevance of mental health in today's world are cri cal
components of our student lives. This is due to the fact that socio-emo onal learning and
mental health educa on are extremely important around the world, as students can only
adapt to educa on and other co-curricular ac vi es , if they are socio-emo onally and
mentally healthy. As a result, educa on on SEL and mental health should be provided. Only
then the younger genera on will be able to tackle their problems smoothly. SEL plays a
significant role in delivering this educa on, par cularly in higher educa on system. This is
due to the fact that many students at higher educa on stage face a variety of issues, such
as academic performance, homesickness, career selec on, rela onships problems, social
pressure and so on.
Social-emo onal learning (SEL) is therefore the process of acquiring self-awareness, self-
control, and interpersonal skills that are necessary for academic, professional, and personal
purpose in life .However, SEL means different things to different people reflec ng it’s
inherent culture and social dimensions .People with good social-emo onal abili es cope
be er with daily problems and gain intellectually, professionally, and socially. From effec ve
problem-solving to self-discipline, impulse control to emo on management, and more, SEL
lays the groundwork for long-term posi ve effects on children, adults, and communi es. In
1994, researchers from several domains, including emo onal intelligence, child
development, preventa ve science, bullying preven on, and public health, joined together
, to iden fy important abili es and competencies adolescents need to succeed in school and
in life. Basically Five Key Components of Effec ve SEL are taught, prac ced, and reinforced
through SEL programming (CASEL, 2003):
1. Self-awareness—Iden fica on and recogni on of one’s own emo ons, recogni on of
strengths in self and
others, sense of self-efficacy, and self-confidence.
2. Social awareness—Empathy, respect for others, and perspec ve taking.
3. Responsible decision making—Evalua on and reflec on, and personal and ethical
responsibility.
4. Self-management—Impulse control, stress management, persistence, goal se ng, and
mo va on.
5. Rela onship skills—Coopera on, help seeking and providing, and communica on(Zins &
Elias,2006)
On the other hand mental health is a concept which includes all our emo onal,
psychological, and social well being. It means it affects our mental processes like how we
think, feel and act towards others. Mental health is as important as the physical health. We
can say that, if a person is both physically and mentally sound, then only he can func on
smoothly and will be able to adjust with his surrounding and with the environment without
any problem.
Dr. Benjamin Rush, father of American psychiatry, was the first to believe that mental
illness is a disease not some sort of spirit or demon possession, which require treatment
just like how a physical illness requires treatment. His classic work ' Observa ons and
Inquiries upon the Diseases of the mind', published in 1812, was the first psychiatric
textbook printed in the United States.
Rela onship between social emo onal learning and mental health and wellbeing:-
According to the World Health Organisa on (WHO), “mental health is a state of well-
being in which an individual realizes his or her own abili es, can cope with the normal
stresses of life, can work produc vely, and is able to make a contribu on to his or her
community.” An individual’s mental health and wellbeing are believed to be determined by
a range of social, psychological, and biological factors; and, as such, can be ac vely
promoted through specific ac ons and interven ons, including through the crea on of an
enabling and suppor ve environment both inside and outside of school. For example, the
Inter-agency Network for Educa on in Emergencies (INEE) has emphasized the importance
of educa on in providing children with a stable environment in the midst of crises, and in
providing a channel through which to provide support for children’s SEL, mental health, and
wellbeing .Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence suggests that mental health problems
affected around 20 percent of children and adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa (A lola,
