SCOPE/ STATUS
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It seeks to understand
, 2
how individuals think, feel, and behave in different situations. Earlier, psychology was
considered a branch of philosophy, but with the development of scientific methods such as
observation, experimentation, and measurement, it emerged as an independent scientific
discipline.
The scope of psychology is very broad because it studies both observable behaviour and
internal mental processes such as perception, memory, learning, emotion, and personality.
Psychology not only aims to understand human behaviour but also to predict and control it in
various situations. Over time, psychology has expanded into many specialized branches that
address different aspects of human life.
The scope or status of psychology is generally divided into two major types: Pure Psychology
and Applied Psychology.
1. Pure (Basic) Psychology
● Definition: The branch of psychology that is concerned with the theoretical
understanding of human behavior, mind, and mental processes, rather than practical
applications.
● Goal: To gain knowledge about psychological phenomena without immediate concern
for practical use.
● Focus: Principles, laws, and theories of behavior, cognition, and emotion.
