ME 463 - MACHINE DESIGN 2
Instructor: Engr. Danielle D. Cabana, MEng
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Cebu Institute of Technology - University
Reference:
• A textbook of Machine Design (SI Units) by R.S. Khurmi, J.K. Gupta
• Design of Machine Elements 4th Edition by Virgil Moring Faires
,CHAPTER 1: Flat Belt Drives
CREATED BY: Engr. Danielle D. Cabaña, MEng., ME
, LEARNING OUTCOMES
• ILO1. Evaluate the critical design factors that influence the
selection of a flat belt drive system.
• ILO2. Derive and explain the equations for belt length and angle
of wrap in open and cross-belt drives.
• ILO3. Analyze the relationship between belt tensions,
transmitted power, and allowable stresses, and apply these in
flat belt selection.
• ILO4. Apply engineering standards, charts, and reference tables
in designing flat belt drives.
• ILO5. Execute the design procedure for selecting and sizing flat
belt cast-iron pulleys.

, BELT DRIVES
The belts or ropes are used to
transmit power from one shaft to
another by means of pulleys which
rotate at the same speed or at
different speeds. The amount of
power transmitted depends upon
the following factors :
1. The velocity of the belt.
2. The tension under which the belt
is placed on the pulleys.
3. The arc of contact between the
belt and the smaller pulley.
4. The conditions under which the
belt is used.
