ABSTRACT
Surface mining feasibility studies have long since been utilized for the
conceptualization of a feasible mine design project. In this case, having the
prime commodity of nickel extracted through an open-pit mine. Such activity
aims to invoke a sense of critical-thinking and recollection of past knowledge
learned from university, to strategically formulate a working mine with minimal
aid and intervention from knowledgeable professionals. The authors were able
to create a strategized mine design for the extraction of the Palanan Nickel
Deposit headed by their very own fictional company — Niquel Angela Mining
Corporation (NAMC). Niquel Angela Mining Corporation with all legal (yet
fictional) needed permits located in Maligaya, Municipality of Palanan, Province
of Isabela, Region of Cagayan Valley will accommodate the Palanan Nickel
Deposit which was brought about through the emplacement of Upper
Cretaceous ophiolites over the eastern Philippine’s proto-arc during the
Paleocene times. The parameters realized by the authors for the optimization of
the pit and over-all operating costs were made from actual formulas and
computations without taking into consideration the safety of the workers and
surrounding communities. The company has a total manpower of 370
individuals. The main power of the company is supplied by the Isabela II Electric
Cooperative Inc. (ISELCO II) which is electric power grid mainly supplying
electricity to northern parts of Isabela. Water is sourced mainly from Magat Dam
or the Palanan River which will be used for washing equipment and as a
mitigating measure for dust. The company has a reported mineable ore reserve
of 39,005,694 wet metric tonnes (WMT), having a moisture content of around
30%, at a Ni cut-off grade of 1.5% with grades averaging at 2.0% within a 152-
hectare portion of the 2,231-hectare tenement area declared by the existing
exploration mining company Minimax Mineral Exploration Corporation which
was approved and confirmed by Niquel Angela Mining Corporation through the
