Evolution & The Themes of Biology
Comprehensive Study Guide & Lecture Notes
I. The Fundamental Concept: Emergent Properties
Biology is organized in a hierarchy from microscopic molecules to the global ecosystem. At each
step upward, emergent properties appear—qualities that weren't present at the lower level.
● The Biological Hierarchy:
1. The Biosphere: All life on Earth and the places where life exists.
2. Ecosystems: All living things in a particular area + non-living components (soil,
water, light).
3. Communities: The array of organisms inhabiting a particular ecosystem.
4. Populations: All individuals of a specific species living within a bounds.
5. Organisms: Individual living things.
6. Organs: Body parts that carry out specific functions (composed of multiple
tissues).
7. Tissues: Groups of cells working together.
8. Cells: Life’s fundamental unit of structure and function.
9. Organelles: Functional components of cells (e.g., chloroplasts).
10.Molecules: Chemical structures consisting of two or more atoms.
Exam Tip: Understand Reductionism (breaking systems down to simple parts) vs.
Systems Biology(modeling the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems).
II. Theme: Life’s Processes Involve Expression of Genetic
Info
1. DNA: The Genetic Material
Within cells, structures called chromosomes contain genetic material in the form of DNA
(Deoxyribonucleic acid).
● The Double Helix: Each DNA molecule is made of two long chains (strands) arranged in
a ladder-like shape.
