Here are the details regarding my project on plant transpiration
1. Background research with in text citations and references in APA format (50 pts):
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation, through
leaves, stems and flowers. Most of the water taken in by a plant does not get used for growth; in
fact about 98% on average water is lost by transpiration and guttation.[1].Stomata are pores located
the all over the leaf surfaces, but are more plentiful on the bottom part of leaves. Stomatal Com-
plexes are cells that surround the stoma and are responsible for opening and closing the pores. It
mostly takes place while the pores or (stomata). Transpiration occurs, when the stomata opens to
allow the passage of carbon dioxide and oxygen during photosynthesis. This process also keeps the
plant cool, alters the osmotic pressure of cells and facilitates mass flow of vitamins, minerals and
nutrients along with water threw out the entire plant system. Plants transpire and tend to loose
more water during the day because sunlight stimulates the opening of the stomata, and also acceler-
ates transpiration by heating the leaf, leading to an increased rate of photosynthesis. Darkness/light
control, nutrients, temperature, wind, maturity of plant and water amounts are different Independent
variables that I believe all can impacts the amount a plant transpires. I am going to use a fan to
simulate wind as my independent variable to see if this changes my cuttings transpiration rate.
2. Variables (10pts):
– Independent Variable: Fan to simulate wind
– Dependent Variable: still air/ no fan
