( Quick revision guide for students )
The American Revolution was a major political and military
conflict in which thirteen American colonies fought to gain
independence from British rule. Before the revolution, these
colonies were part of the British Empire and were governed by
British laws and policies. Although the colonies were located
far from Britain, they were still expected to follow the
decisions made by the British Parliament and the king. Over
time, many colonists became increasingly dissatisfied with
British rule, especially when they felt that their rights and
freedoms were being ignored.
One of the main sources of conflict was the issue of taxation.
The British government imposed several taxes on the colonies
to cover the costs of wars and maintain control over colonial
territories. However, the colonists opposed these taxes because
they had no representation in the British Parliament. This led
to the famous slogan “No taxation without representation”.
Protests against British rule increased, including the Boston Tea
Party.
Eventually, the conflict turned into a war between the colonies
and Great Britain. The war ended in 1783 with the Treaty of
Paris, which recognized the independence of the United States
of America.

, Causes of the American Revolution
Heavy Taxes on Colonists
After several expensive wars, especially the Seven Years’ War, the
British government faced serious financial problems.to recover these
costs, the British government imposed several taxes. Examples include
the Stamp Act and the Tea Act. Colonists strongly opposed these taxes
because they had no representatives in the British Parliament.
Lack of Political Representation
Colonists believed in the principle of “No taxation without
representation.” Since they had no voice in the British Parliament, they
felt the British government had no right to impose taxes on them.
Restrictive British Policies
The British government passed strict laws to maintain control over the
colonies. These laws limited trade and economic activities, which
angered many colonists.
Growing Desire for Self-Government
Many colonists wanted greater freedom and independence to govern
themselves without interference from Britain.
