Define Problem Solving Purposeful act of observing a problem and then deciding to solve it, after
considering solutions and deciding upon one.


Compare the 8 step practical problem solving OODA Loop (Observe, orient, decide, act) is used for short and fast
approach to the OODA loop model situations. Is a cycle that can be continuous until a problem is solved. 8 step
Practical Problem solving method (PPSM) is for longer term problem solving.
Objective is to help airmen focus on their problem solving skills on issues that
affect our mission, our work centers, and our people.


Understand the steps for the 8 step practical problem 1) Clarify and validate the problem
solving method 2) Break down the problem and identify the performance gap
3) Set improvements targets (strategic planning)
4) Determine a root cause
5) Develop countermeasures (more analytical thinking)
6) See Countermeasures through (collect data, implement contingency plans,
provide required training
7) Confirm results and process (closely mirrors the data collection portion of
step 2)
8) Standardize successful processes (This is the most commonly skipped
step)
