What is a technical specification? A technical specification is produced by a national or
international body (e.g. ISO) so that suppliers can
make a product or deliver a service to an approved
standard
- result is that a buyer can select from a wide range
of suppliers knowing that is will recieve the same
quality from each of them
What are drawings? Drawings (often called engineering drawings or
technical drawings) are complementary to technical
specifications
- put into a visual form
- E.g. drawings of the component parts or sub-
assemblies, a list of the parts to be used
What is a conformance specification? Conformance is the ability of a product or service to
meet its design specification
- gives precise details about how a porduct is to be
made or service delivered
- provides in-depth detail for both functional and
non-functional requirements and covers assumptions,
constraints, performance, dimensions, weights and
reliability
,What is a performance specification? This avoids drawbacks of the design specification by
providing the specific performance that is required
but not the method of achieving that performance
- suppliers are free to choose the materials they ise
and the manufacturing process, delivery process
Performance specification - 3 types - Outcome specifications
- Output specifications
- Statement of work specifications
What is an outcome specification? Outcome specifications require specific capabilities
from suppliers
- should identify what needs to be achieved and the
capabilities that are required to achieve that outcome
- oucomes can be difficult to measure, so output
specifications are often used instead in the belief that
these outputs will deliver the outcome needed

writing a business requirement

What is a statement of works It is commonly used in projects and services. It is a
detailed description of the specific tasks or services
a contractor must perform under the terms of a
contract
, What are the 3 main types of SoW? Design SoW = supplier is instructed as to how the
work should be done, the quality levels required and
the specification of any materials used
Level of effort and materials/unit rate SoW = used in
short-term contracts and specifies the mainunit of
delivery as an hour of work together with the
materials needed to perform that activity and the
number of hours the activity needed
Performance-based SoW = provides the supplier with
the purpose of the project or service but does not
specify how the worik will be done or what materials
are to be used
Typical contents of a SoW - purpose of the project or service
- scope of the work involved
- detailed set of tasks
- milestones that determine the overall length of the
project
- payment schedule detailing what will be paid
Standards Standards are measures that show that those
expectations have been met
This can include:
- level of performance of a machine
- quality of materials that have been used
- safety levels in food and drink
Specification - Internet The internet can be a very powerful tool for finding
information to develop specifications or even for
specifications themselves
- Information gathered from the internet should be
checked and tested thoroughly to ensure it is reliable
and accurate
