1. Explanation of the CAPS Document
The CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) document provides a
comprehensive guideline for teaching and learning in South African schools. It outlines
what teachers are required to teach and what learners are expected to learn in each
subject and grade. The document specifies the content to be covered, the skills and
values learners must acquire, and how teaching should be structured throughout the
year.
It also provides guidance on lesson planning, time allocation, and assessment methods.
CAPS ensures uniformity in education by standardising what is taught across all
schools. It promotes quality education by clearly defining learning outcomes and
assessment standards. Furthermore, it supports teachers by offering clear instructions
on pacing, sequencing of topics, and evaluation of learner performance.
